VA Disability Compensation Guide 2026: Ratings, Payments & Claims

August 10, 2026 | 11 min read

Receiving a VA disability rating is one of the most important financial decisions a veteran can make. Your rating determines not only your monthly compensation but also your access to healthcare, priority grouping, and eligibility for other benefits. In 2026, VA disability compensation rates increased by 2.7% (COLA) effective December 1, 2025.

This guide covers everything you need to know about VA disability compensation in 2026 — from how ratings are calculated to the monthly payment amounts for each rating level, and how to maximize your benefits.

2026 VA Disability at a Glance

COLA Increase: 2.7% (effective Dec 1, 2025) | 100% Rating (no dependents): $3,829.44/month | 100% (with spouse+1 child): $4,056.32/month | Common 100% Conditions: PTSD, TBI, severe hearing loss, cancer, amputations

How VA Disability Ratings Work

The VA rates each service-connected condition from 0% to 100% in 10% increments. The rating reflects how much the condition affects your ability to function in daily life. Multiple conditions are combined using the VA Combined Ratings Table, not simple addition.

Example: A veteran with a 50% rating for PTSD and a 30% rating for tinnitus does not receive 80%. Instead:

  1. Start with 100% "healthy"
  2. Apply 50% PTSD: 50% of 100 = 50% disabled, 50% remaining
  3. Apply 30% tinnitus: 30% of 50% remaining = 15% disabled
  4. Total: 50% + 15% = 65%, rounded down to 60%

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a 70% VA disability rating pay in 2026?

A 70% VA disability rating pays $1,663.19/month for a veteran with no dependents, $1,737.74 with a spouse, and $1,801.78 with a spouse and one child (2026 rates, effective Dec 1, 2025). Additional children increase the rate by $116.28 each.
