How Much Is a Military Pension After 20 Years? Real 2026 Numbers by Rank
"Is 20 years worth it?" is the eternal question in every military forum — and the honest answer starts with real numbers, not slogans. Here's what the pension actually pays in 2026 for the most common retiring ranks, under both retirement systems, with the math laid out so you can run your own case.
The Pension Formula (It's Just Two Numbers)
Pension = High-3 average × multiplier × years of service
- High-3 average: your highest 36 months of base pay (usually your final 3 years)
- Multiplier: 2.5% per year under legacy High-3; 2.0% per year under BRS
Twenty years under the legacy system = 50% of your High-3 average, for life, COLA-adjusted. Under BRS it's 40% — the price of the TSP match and continuation pay you got along the way.
Real 2026 Numbers: 20-Year Retirees by Rank
Using 2026 base pay tables, approximate gross monthly pensions (before tax, before any VA offset):
| Rank at Retirement | High-3 Avg (approx.) | Legacy High-3 Pension (50%) | BRS Pension (40%) |
|---|---|---|---|
| E-6, 20 years | $5,400 | ~$2,700/mo | ~$2,160/mo |
| E-7, 20 years | $5,900 | ~$2,950/mo | ~$2,360/mo |
| E-8, 20 years | $6,600 | ~$3,300/mo | ~$2,640/mo |
| E-9, 24 years | $7,800 | ~$3,900/mo | ~$3,120/mo |
| O-3E, 20 years | $8,200 | ~$4,100/mo | ~$3,280/mo |
| O-5, 20 years | $9,800 | ~$4,900/mo | ~$3,920/mo |
These are gross figures. Three adjustments change the take-home picture:
- Taxes: the pension is ordinary income — federal and (usually) state tax apply
- VA disability offset: with a VA rating, tax-free VA compensation replaces an equal amount of taxable retired pay — a 50% rating on a $2,950 pension means roughly $1,200 moves from taxable to tax-free
- SBS/SBP premiums: if you elect the Survivor Benefit Plan, 6.5% of your chosen base comes off the top
BRS vs. High-3: The Real Comparison
The pension column makes High-3 look strictly better — but that ignores the BRS extras:
| Component | Legacy High-3 | BRS |
|---|---|---|
| Pension multiplier | 2.5%/year | 2.0%/year |
| TSP government match | None | Up to 5% of base pay |
| Continuation pay | None | 2.5–13× monthly base pay at year 12 (service-specific) |
| Lump-sum option | No | Optional discounted 25/50% of pension at retirement |
Run a realistic case: an E-7 under BRS who captures the 5% match from year 1 and invests it in the C/S/I funds typically accumulates $250,000–$500,000+ of TSP balance by year 20 (market-dependent) — on top of a pension only ~$600/month smaller. Over a 30-year retirement, the match almost always wins unless the member never invested the match money. The calculator at our retirement page lets you compare both systems on your own numbers.
Why the Last 3 Years Are Worth More Than the First 17
Because the pension keys off your highest 36 months, promotions and raises in the final stretch re-price your entire retirement. An E-7 making E-8 in year 18 doesn't just raise their paycheck for 2 years — it lifts the High-3 average that multiplies through every pension payment for the rest of their life. If you're deciding whether to compete for one more board, this is the math that matters.
The same cliff cuts the other way: at 19 years and 364 days, the pension value is zero. No other year of service comes close to that marginal value.
What Retired Pay Doesn't Cover
- BAH/BAS stop — housing and food allowances end at retirement (unless you're recalled)
- Healthcare changes — TRICARE Prime/Select replaces active-duty coverage; premiums are modest but real
- Gym/base privileges continue — most installation access stays, one of the underrated benefits
Frequently Asked Questions
How much does a retired E-7 with 20 years make in 2026?
Roughly $2,600–$2,900/month gross under High-3, or $2,350–$2,600 under BRS — before taxes, VA offset, and SBP deductions.
Is military pension taxed?
Yes, as ordinary income federally and in most states (several states exempt it). VA disability compensation is tax-free and offsets retired pay.
Does the pension include BAH?
No — pensions are calculated from base pay only. BAH and BAS stop at retirement.
Should I pick BRS or High-3?
Anyone who joined after January 1, 2018 is automatically BRS. For those who had the choice, BRS wins on total wealth for most members who invest the match; High-3 wins if you'd never save the match money.
What if I get out at 19 years?
No pension at all — the benefit is all-or-nothing at 20. That final year is worth more than the previous ten combined.
